Dubai launches world’s first icons for AI-human content transparency
New icon system unveiled to clarify AI’s role in creative work
DUBAI: His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation, has approved the launch of a pioneering global classification system to distinguish between human and machine contributions in content creation.
The system, known as the Human–Machine Collaboration (HMC) classification, is designed to offer greater transparency in research, publishing, and creative work. Developed by the Dubai Future Foundation, the initiative reflects Dubai’s ongoing efforts to lead global innovation in artificial intelligence and responsible technology use.
Sheikh Hamdan stated, “Distinguishing between human creativity and artificial intelligence has become a real challenge in light of today’s rapid technological advances. That’s why we launched the world’s first Human–Machine Collaboration Icons – a classification system that brings transparency to how research documents, publications, and content are created.”

Government-wide implementation
Sheikh Hamdan also directed all Dubai Government entities to begin adopting the system in their knowledge-based and research efforts. The classification is intended to support ethical research practices and improve accountability as automation and intelligent systems play a greater role in content production.
The icon-based system allows readers, publishers, and decision-makers to easily identify the level of machine involvement in any given output. It is applicable across various fields including academic research, media, design, and technical publishing.
Five primary icons
The system features five primary icons that indicate the extent of human-machine collaboration:
- All Human: No machine involvement.
- Human Led: Human-driven work, refined by machine.
- Machine Assisted: Equal contribution between human and machine.
- Machine Led: Machine-driven, with human oversight.
- All Machine: Fully machine-generated content.
Nine functional icons
In addition to the primary categories, nine functional icons identify the stages at which collaboration occurred. These stages include ideation, literature review, data collection, analysis, interpretation, writing, translation, visuals, and design. The system does not assign percentages but encourages creators to disclose involvement transparently, acknowledging that judgement may vary.
The icon classification is adaptable to various formats, including visual and video content. The Dubai Future Foundation announced that all of its forthcoming publications will implement this system, underscoring its commitment to transparency.
Global adoption encouraged
The Crown Prince has called on researchers, writers, designers, and content creators worldwide to adopt the system responsibly. He emphasised that the initiative aims to serve the global public good and set a benchmark for ethical content creation in the era of artificial intelligence.
